Nancy began practicing Ashtanga Yoga in 1973 with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore, India. She had traveled with David Williams joining him on his search for yoga.
While in college, Nancy suffered from severe migraine headaches that resulted in her university taking her out of all physical activities. At 19 years old, she was told never to exercise again and was given drugs to help relieve the pain but nothing to cure the headaches. She was told there was nothing to be done except to learn to live with the situation. Guruji had a very different idea. He taught her the primary and intermediate series in 2 months time! He had her practice with fewer vinyasa and joined postures together without jumping back. She was 24 years old when she first arrived in Mysore.
In this workshop, Nancy will share the way he taught her. At the time, she was having 10-day periods and sleeping 12 hours a day. Guruji taught them twice a day for four months.
She continues to practice and now at 74 years, she is healthier than when she first walked into his class. Over the years, whenever she asked Pattabhi Jois how she should teach, he always said” You teach the way I taught you” and that has guided her in her teaching.
Nancy is happy to share this method as it can be very useful not only for “beginners” but as we age, after childbirth or illness or injury. It’s a way to continue ashtanga practice when life “happens”.
There will be a short introduction on what to expect, then a led primary followed by a discussion of the practice we did. We will end with Q&A.
